Caravaggio 2025: the major exhibition at Palazzo Barberini

Rome pays tribute to one of its most brilliant and tormented geniuses with the exhibition “Caravaggio 2025”, hosted in the magnificent halls of Palazzo Barberini from March 7 to July 14, 2025. This highly anticipated event is a must-see for art lovers and curious visitors alike, offering a powerful journey through the dramatic intensity and groundbreaking vision of Caravaggio.

The exhibition: a journey through Caravaggio’s Rome

Titled “Caravaggio 2025. The Image of the Divine”, the exhibition is curated by Francesca Cappelletti and Maria Cristina Terzaghi. It features around 40 works, including masterpieces by Caravaggio himself and other great artists of his time.

The show explores the Roman period of Caravaggio’s career, focusing on the commissions and locations that shaped his vision. His revolutionary approach to sacred subjects — raw, realistic, and deeply human — is on full display through iconic works like “The Fortune Teller”, “Saint John the Baptist”, “Martha and Mary Magdalene”, and “Judith and Holofernes”. Several of the paintings have been loaned from major international collections.

One section of the exhibition highlights the evolution of Christian iconography after Caravaggio, showcasing the influence he had on contemporaries and followers such as Orazio Gentileschi, Giovanni Baglione, and Jusepe de Ribera.
